Bhubaneswar BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi has publicly opposed the Odisha government's decision to cancel the Bhubaneswar Metro project, urging Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to reconsider. The project, which received an approved budget of ₹6,255.94 crore, was set to connect Bhubaneswar airport to Trisulia and was initially launched under former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in 2024, with a completion deadline of December 2027. Sarangi's call comes amid criticism from the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party, which has accused the government of neglecting the project. Urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra clarified that the project has not been scrapped but is currently on hold due to concerns over its viability. The government is now exploring alternative metro plans that would encompass a broader region, including Puri and Cuttack. Sarangi argues that ignoring public demand risks undermining trust in government development promises and emphasizes that not all projects should be profit-driven, as some are essential for public welfare.
