The Election Commission of India has reported that during Phase 2 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), over 2 crore new voters were added across 12 states and Union territories, resulting in net deletions of nearly 5.2 crore voters, which constitutes about 10.2% of the total electorate of approximately 51 crore. This extensive clean-up involved identifying and removing over 6.5 crore voters who were absent, deceased, or registered in multiple locations. The states affected included Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu, among others. The highest percentage of roll purification was recorded in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands at 16.6%, followed by Uttar Pradesh at 13.2% and Gujarat at 13.1%. The clean-up process is expected to enhance the integrity of the electoral rolls, as it reduces the risk of bogus voting and ensures a more accurate representation of eligible voters. Following this revision, 45.8 crore voters remain on the lists across the affected states and UTs.
