During an election rally in Manikchak, Malda district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for allegedly harassing innocent locals while failing to apprehend the actual culprits behind the recent violence against judicial officers. Banerjee stated that approximately 50 innocent individuals have been detained by the NIA in connection with the investigation into the gherao of judicial officers in Mothabari. She emphasized the need for locals to seek assistance from tribunals for correcting errors in the electoral rolls rather than approaching judicial officers involved in ongoing cases. The violence, which occurred during protests over the deletion of names from the electoral rolls, resulted in the gherao of seven judicial officers and the arrest of 35 individuals by the state CID. The Supreme Court has directed the NIA to investigate the incident, expressing concern over the West Bengal administration's handling of the situation.
