Palwankar Baloo, born in July 1875 in Dharwad, Maharashtra, emerged as India's first bowling superstar when he represented the all-India cricket team in 1911. Despite his exceptional skills, Baloo faced severe caste discrimination, being served tea outside the pavilion while his upper-caste teammates enjoyed porcelain cups. His talent caught the attention of influential figures, including Captain J G Greig, who advocated for his inclusion in competitive teams. Baloo's achievements inspired many in the Dalit community, including Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, who recognized him as a hero. Throughout his life, Baloo advocated for social reform, aligning with Mahatma Gandhi's vision while opposing Ambedkar's more radical views. He participated in the Bombay Legislative Assembly elections in 1937, where he garnered over 11,000 votes, marking a significant moment for professional cricketers in politics. Baloo passed away in July 1955, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped the landscape of Indian cricket and caste dynamics.
