The government of Manipur has temporarily suspended internet and mobile data services in five districts—Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur—following violent protests over the deaths of two children in a suspected rocket attack. The incident occurred in Bishnupur district, where a five-month-old girl and a five-year-old boy succumbed to injuries after a projectile struck their home early Tuesday morning. Local residents reported a loud explosion, leading to panic in the village of Moirang Tronglaobi Awang Leikai, where the attack took place. The Manipur home minister, K Govindas, condemned the incident on social media, expressing condolences to the bereaved family and assuring that those responsible would be brought to justice. The region has seen a resurgence of ethnic violence, particularly between the Meiti and Kuki communities, following a controversial high court order in May 2023 that had previously granted certain benefits to the Meiti community. Security forces have increased their presence in the area and initiated search operations to prevent further violence.
