The Maharashtra government has stated that no irregularities were found in the issuance of arms licences in Pune, following allegations made by BJP MLA Suresh Dhas. He claimed that senior police officers Jalinder Supekar and Amitabh Gupta issued 569 pistol licences in exchange for bribes of ₹20 lakh (approximately $24,000 USD) each, which allegedly contributed to rising crime in the region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis defended the officers, noting that 433 arms licences were sanctioned in accordance with the Arms Act of 1959 and the Arms Rules of 2016. He also mentioned that only 10 criminal cases involving licensed weapons were registered during the specified period, with all accused arrested and prosecuted. The government indicated that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had not received any complaints against Supekar, although a recent complaint from June 2025 is under examination. Additionally, a previous inquiry into another officer, Shashikant Chavan, found no disproportionate assets, leading to the closure of the case in March 2020. The scrutiny of the arms licence issue intensified following the suicide of Vaishnavi Hagawane, amid allegations of misuse of power by Supekar.
