Hallomajra Chowk, located on National Highway 5 (NH-5) in Chandigarh, has emerged as the city's deadliest traffic black spot, recording nine fatalities over the past three years, according to local police data. Fatalities have increased from one in 2023 to four in both 2024 and 2025. The area is plagued by a combination of speeding vehicles, unsafe merging of slow-moving traffic, and inadequate pedestrian facilities. Traffic congestion is exacerbated by heavy truck and bus traffic, as well as local vehicles. The Poultry Farm Chowk, situated on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, faces similar issues, with many pedestrians and cyclists forced to navigate dangerous conditions without proper infrastructure. The traffic police have proposed short-term measures such as road widening and creating new exits to improve traffic flow. Long-term solutions, including better management of slow-moving traffic and dedicated pedestrian pathways, are yet to be approved. Other identified black spots in Chandigarh, such as the Kalagram light point and Housing Board light point, also report significant accident rates, indicating a broader issue that requires urgent attention.
