India has recently taken steps to alleviate its energy supply crisis by granting waivers for two Iranian cargo shipments. The country, which is the world's second-largest importer of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is currently facing its worst gas crisis in decades, leading to rationing of supplies to industries to prioritize household needs. The waivers allow the LPG tanker Aurora, despite being nearly 30 years old, and the crude oil tanker Jaya, which is under U.S. sanctions, to dock at Indian ports. These approvals are made on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that only vessels meeting safety standards are considered. Typically, India requires tankers older than 20 years to have seaworthiness certification and prohibits vessels subject to U.S. sanctions from entering its ports. Iran has been using older tankers to bypass Western sanctions in recent years, and this move by India reflects a strategic decision to secure energy supplies amid ongoing challenges.
