Thailand is considering implementing mandatory accident insurance for foreign visitors to mitigate the financial burden on hospitals treating uninsured patients. The director of Vachira Phuket Hospital noted that the facility incurs about 10 million baht in treatment costs annually for foreign patients lacking insurance. The Ministry of Public Health estimates that unpaid medical bills from foreign tourists reach at least 100 million baht each year, with major tourist destinations like Phuket and Chiang Mai being the most affected. Many visitors, particularly those inexperienced with motorcycle riding, contribute to the rising accident rates. Despite travel insurance costing approximately 1,100 baht for a two-week stay and covering medical expenses of 3.6 million to 9 million baht, many tourists arrive without it. A proposed 300 baht entry fee for air arrivals is under cabinet review, but the focus is shifting towards making insurance compulsory, similar to requirements in regions like the Schengen Area and the United Arab Emirates.
