The Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project in Mumbai has transitioned from planning to execution with the launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) 'Nayak'. This ambitious project, spanning 11.84 kilometers, aims to significantly reduce travel time between Thane and Borivali from 90 minutes to just 15 minutes. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is overseeing the project, executed by Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL). The TBMs, including 'Nayak', are designed for hard rock excavation while minimizing surface disruption, weighing approximately 2.5 metric tonnes and featuring cutter heads of 13.2-13.34 meters in diameter. The tunnels will accommodate three lanes, including an emergency lane, and will be equipped with modern safety features such as ventilation systems and smoke detectors. Authorities have emphasized that construction will be conducted with minimal impact on the environment, particularly as the tunnels pass beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. A dedicated debris transport corridor and strict traffic regulations are in place to maintain order during construction. The project is expected to operate 24 hours a day, employing around 300 workers at any time, reflecting the urgency and scale of this transformative infrastructure initiative.
