A devastating accident occurred on Monday morning when a cement mixer truck collided head-on with an overcrowded van on a newly constructed bridge over the Ulhas river in Thane district, Maharashtra, leading to the loss of 11 lives. The van, which was providing shuttle taxi services, was carrying 11 passengers despite being authorized for only six. The driver of the cement mixer, Kamlesh Yadav, has been arrested and faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. Local authorities have highlighted that the van services operate illegally, often charging between ₹70 and ₹100 per seat. The Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Ashutosh Barkul, has urged commuters to avoid unauthorized vehicles, particularly with the upcoming vacation season expected to increase road traffic. Over the past year, 1,896 vehicles involved in illegal transportation have been penalized, with fines totaling ₹25.67 lakh (approximately $30,000 USD). Regular inspections are being conducted to ensure compliance and enhance safety for commuters.
