In Chennai, the mango season has commenced but is experiencing a sluggish start due to the absence of early summer rains. Farmers from Andhra Pradesh and other southern states are holding back on large-scale harvests, waiting for moisture to enhance the fruit's quality. Currently, Banganapalli mangoes from Andhra Pradesh are reaching the Koyambedu wholesale fruit market, priced at around ₹120 per kilogram, with retail prices going up to ₹220. However, customers have noted that the mangoes lack sweetness and aroma, attributed to the season not fully picking up yet. K Jayaraman, a wholesale trader, indicated that instead of the usual 50 to 60 truckloads during peak months, fewer than 15 truckloads are arriving daily. He anticipates that the season will improve by the end of April with the arrival of summer showers, which are crucial for enhancing the fruit's flavor and size. Farmers from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra are optimistic about a good harvest of other varieties such as Sindhoora and Alphonso, expected to flood the market by early May.
