The Supreme Court of India has ruled against granting interim voting rights to voters in West Bengal whose names were removed during the special intensive revision (SIR) process. Trinamool Congress leader Kalyan Banerjee argued that 1.6 million appeals have been filed by these voters, urging that they should be allowed to participate in the upcoming two-phase assembly election. However, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant firmly stated that permitting this would jeopardize the voting rights of those involved. Justice Joymalya Bagchi noted that there are 3.4 million appeals related to the SIR process, as confirmed by a report from the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already frozen the voter list for West Bengal, meaning no new names can be added before the election unless directed by the Supreme Court, which did not occur in this instance. To address the situation, nineteen appellate tribunals have been established in the state to adjudicate the 2.7 million cases affected by the deletions.
