The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has passed a resolution to absorb 545 contractual employees who have been providing essential services for nearly two decades. This decision, spearheaded by Sagar Naik (leader of the house), aims to offer these workers a pay scale comparable to permanent employees, addressing their long-standing low honorarium. The move is projected to impose an annual financial burden of around ₹100 crore (approximately $12 million USD) on the civic body. The implementation will occur in phases, with oversight from four authorities, including the municipal commissioner and chief auditor. The resolution aligns with observations made by the Bombay High Court, which has emphasized the need for justice for long-serving employees. The NMMC will prepare an implementation roadmap and present its position in an ongoing court case regarding the regularization of these workers. The resolution also prohibits new recruitment for roles identified for absorption, ensuring that these long-serving employees receive the stability they deserve.
