In Hyderabad, police have launched a crackdown on artificial mango ripening as the mango season progresses. A trader was arrested in Chudi Bazar for using six sachets of a chemical ripening agent per 20 kg of mangoes, exceeding the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India guidelines that allow up to five sachets. The excessive use of these chemicals poses significant health risks, including immediate effects like throat irritation and long-term complications such as nervous system damage. Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar emphasized the importance of public vigilance against potentially toxic mangoes, especially those falsely labeled as 'organic.' During the operation, police seized 200 kg of mangoes and multiple packets of the ripening agent. Legal action is being initiated against those violating food safety norms, and the police are closely monitoring the sale of adulterated mangoes to protect public health.
