The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported that 8,251 penalties were imposed on commuters for various offences between September 2022 and February 2023. The most common violations included filming reels, using offensive language, and fighting, with 2,468 penalties issued for such nuisance-related offences. Unlawful entry into women's coaches accounted for 2,312 penalties, while 2,249 commuters were penalized for sitting on the floor inside trains. The penalties varied month by month, with January recording the highest number of offences. The DMRC noted that most offences attracted a standard penalty of ₹200, but the Centre is proposing to enhance penalties under the Metro Railways Act, 2002, through the Jan Vishwas Bill, 2026. This could see fines for minor violations increase to ₹2,500, with more serious offences potentially incurring penalties up to ₹10,000.
