Reena Verma, a vibrant 94-year-old woman living independently in Salunke Vihar, Pune, India, fulfilled a lifelong dream by visiting her childhood home in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 2022. Born in 1932 in Rawalpindi, Verma's family was displaced during the Partition of India in 1947. After years of longing to return, she joined a WhatsApp group called Punjab Heritage, which connected her with journalists who helped amplify her story. After overcoming visa hurdles, including a delay due to political changes in Pakistan, she received a three-month visa thanks to intervention from the new foreign minister. In July 2022, her daughter accompanied her to the Wagah border, where Verma crossed into Pakistan alone, greeted by a crowd and the media. The visit exceeded her expectations, as she was welcomed by the current residents of her childhood home, who even offered her a night’s stay. Reflecting on her journey, Verma cherishes her independence, embraces technology, and encourages others to remain socially active and pursue their passions, demonstrating that age is no barrier to adventure and connection.
