The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the West Bengal state government to suspend four officers from the Kolkata Police due to their failure to manage chaos during the nomination of Suvendu Adhikari, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. The suspended officers include Siddhartha Dutta, deputy commissioner-II of South Division, Priyankar Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Alipore police station, Chandi Charan Banerjee, additional officer-in-charge, and Saurabh Chatterjee, a sergeant. The incident occurred when Adhikari, who is contesting against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the Bhabanipur seat, filed his nomination papers alongside Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Tensions escalated as local Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers gathered and shouted anti-BJP slogans, leading to clashes. Allegations were made that TMC supporters disrupted the event by playing campaign songs through loudspeakers around the nomination center.
