On Saturday evening, Akhnoor, Jammu, experienced a rare tornado-like weather event that lasted for about 10 minutes. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a rapidly rotating column of wind that lifted dust and debris, causing residents to seek shelter. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Jammu and Kashmir Meteorological Department, explained that the phenomenon was triggered by thunderstorm activity leading to a squall line, but it did not qualify as a fully developed tornado. Radar data showed no clear rotational signature, and wind patterns were disorganized, indicating a low likelihood of sustained tornado formation. Despite the brief panic, authorities confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or property damage. Such isolated weather events are uncommon in the Jammu region, although similar occurrences have been noted in parts of Punjab in recent years.
