West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) successfully arrested the alleged mastermind behind the hostage situation involving seven judicial officers in Malda district. During a rally in Dakshin Dinajpur district, she accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of orchestrating the incident and attempting to create unrest in the region. Banerjee claimed that the BJP used Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicles to transport cash, asserting that she possesses records of these movements which she plans to reveal at the right moment. The hostage situation, where three women judicial officers were among those held, was described by Banerjee as a conspiracy involving the BJP, the Indian Secular Front (ISF), and the Indian National Congress. She emphasized that the CID operates under her authority, countering any claims of its independence from her administration.
