In a significant shift towards digital payments, the Indian government will discontinue cash transactions at toll plazas starting April 10. As per a gazette notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, vehicles must use FASTag or pay via Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with UPI payments attracting a 1.25 times fee compared to FASTag. Previously, cash payments allowed commuters to pay double the toll fee, but this option is now eliminated. If a vehicle passes through a toll without payment, an electronic notice will be sent to the owner, allowing for online payment. If the payment is made within 72 hours, no additional fees will apply; however, payments made after this period will incur double the toll fee. Failure to pay within 15 days will result in the amount being recorded in the Ministry's VAHAN system, leading to potential restrictions on the vehicle.
