The ‘IIT Bombay-Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation’ has been launched at the Powai campus of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) in Mumbai, with full funding from Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation. This centre aims to equip over 100,000 students with skills in sustainability-related fields by 2030. In the initial pilot phase, which will last two months, the centre will focus on establishing infrastructure and developing a specialized curriculum, training the first batch of 250 students. The program will offer certificate courses that blend classroom learning with practical projects addressing real-world sustainability issues. Students will complete around 40 hours of training across five tracks: sustainability reporting, sustainable finance, energy security, sustainability infrastructure, and policy advocacy. This initiative is crucial as India is projected to need 3.4 million jobs in the green sector by 2030, with a significant shortfall in skilled professionals, particularly in renewable energy, expected by 2027.
