Praveen Khandelwal, the Secretary General of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), has urged the Indian government to take decisive action against alleged malpractices by e-commerce companies that distort the retail ecosystem. In a communication to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, he highlighted issues such as predatory pricing, deep discounting, and preferential treatment for select sellers, which he claims threaten the survival of small and medium traders. Khandelwal called for the establishment of a National Retail Development Council to ensure that the voices of traders are included in policymaking, promoting a level playing field between offline and online trade. He welcomed the recent passage of the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026, which aims to enhance the ease of doing business by decriminalizing numerous provisions across various laws. Khandelwal emphasized that while digital commerce presents new opportunities, it also brings challenges that must be addressed to maintain a fair marketplace. He reiterated that India's 9 crore traders are essential to the economy and their interests must be safeguarded for inclusive growth.
