On Friday, the Supreme Court of India denied bail to Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Punjab, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on corruption charges. The court's bench, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, stated that Bhullar could approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court for bail again if his trial does not commence within two months. Bhullar's bail plea had previously been dismissed by the high court on February 16, 2026, after a special CBI court in Chandigarh rejected it on January 2, 2026. His lawyer, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, argued that Bhullar, who has been under suspension for over six months, is not a flight risk and that the allegations against him are weak. The court, however, maintained that it was not inclined to grant bail at this stage. Bhullar was arrested on October 16, 2025, following raids that reportedly uncovered over ₹7 crore (approximately $840,000 USD) in cash and valuables at his premises. He is also under investigation for disproportionate assets by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs granting sanction to prosecute him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
