India has achieved a remarkable milestone with 100 crore internet subscribers, making it one of the top three countries in terms of internet users. However, a staggering 4.19 lakh government schools, approximately 40%, still lack internet access, according to official data analyzed by News18. In the 2024-25 academic year, India had 10.13 lakh government schools, out of which only 5.93 lakh were connected to the internet. This indicates that while three in five government schools have computers, only two in five have functional systems for teaching. The Ministry of Communications reported that as of December 2025, 97.94% of India's 1.02 billion internet subscribers are broadband users, with 86% of the population covered by 5G networks. Despite improvements since the Covid-19 pandemic, where internet access rose to 59% in government schools, significant disparities remain, particularly in states like West Bengal, where only 16% of government schools are connected. Conversely, states such as Assam and Andhra Pradesh have made significant strides, with internet access in government schools reaching 98% and 99%, respectively. The ongoing digital divide emphasizes the urgent need for improved internet connectivity in classrooms, especially for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
