The Uttar Pradesh Department of Higher Education is undertaking a significant initiative to improve the teacher-student ratio in government and aided degree colleges across the state. The plan involves creating clusters of teachers in each district, allowing for the redeployment of faculty members from colleges with lower student numbers to those experiencing higher enrolments. Dr. BL Sharma, the director of higher education, emphasized the need for optimal utilization of teaching resources to address disparities in student enrolment. A key factor contributing to declining enrolment is the predominance of traditional academic courses in government colleges, which has led to students favoring professional courses like BBA, BCA, and BTech. To counteract this trend, the state is encouraging private sector involvement and enhancing the quality of education through the use of e-content. Currently, there are 53 private universities and over 7,520 private colleges in Uttar Pradesh, compared to just 24 government universities and 216 government colleges. The state plans to launch a comprehensive campaign to boost student admissions and improve educational standards, including the production of video lectures and increased access to e-learning resources.
