The Ministry of Railways has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC), which connects Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) in Maharashtra to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. This project, executed by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), has undergone development in phases, culminating in successful trial runs on March 31, 2026. The trial runs demonstrated the operational readiness of the remaining 102-km section of the corridor. The WDFC is designed to facilitate the efficient movement of goods, effectively doubling freight capacity and improving overall transportation efficiency. Additionally, the Ministry has completed the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), stretching 1,337 kilometers from Ludhiana in Punjab to Sonnagar in Bihar. In the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27, a proposal for a new Dedicated Freight Corridor linking Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat has been introduced, further enhancing the freight transportation network.
