Delta Air Lines announced on Tuesday that it will increase fees for checked bags on domestic and select short-haul international routes, effective for bookings made from Wednesday. The fee for the first checked bag will rise to $45, the second to $55, and the third to $200. This decision is a response to soaring jet fuel prices, which have surged by more than 85% since the onset of the Iran conflict on February 28, disrupting oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil supply. Delta's fee adjustments come as the airline industry grapples with rising operational costs. Despite these increases, Delta has a subsidiary-owned refinery in Pennsylvania that supplies nearly three-quarters of its fuel needs, providing some insulation against price spikes. However, the airline remains vulnerable to fluctuations in crude oil prices. Other airlines, such as JetBlue, have also raised their checked bag fees, reflecting a broader trend in the industry to manage increased costs while keeping ticket prices competitive. Delta's frequent-flyer programs and premium fare benefits will not be affected by these changes.
