The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has taken a significant step towards sustainability by adding 250 electric and CNG vehicles to its fleet, increasing its total eco-friendly vehicle count to nearly 1,000. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off these vehicles, which will be operated by private contractors already engaged in door-to-door waste collection. This expansion addresses the LMC's previous reliance on approximately 450 diesel-powered vehicles that consumed about 8,500 litres of diesel daily, costing the corporation around ₹7.44 lakh (approximately $9,000 USD) each day. The LMC has ceased the procurement of diesel vehicles, opting to invest fully in electric and CNG alternatives. According to Manoj Prabhat, chief engineer at the LMC, the addition of these vehicles will enhance operational efficiency and ensure consistent waste collection across the city, particularly in newly added zones.
