Patients at Lucknow's government hospitals, notably King George's Medical University (KGMU) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS), are experiencing alarming delays in critical diagnostic tests such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Waiting periods can stretch from several days to nearly two months, forcing many to seek expensive private care. For example, Saleha from Khadra and Guddu from Balrampur had to turn to private facilities due to unbearable pain and long wait times. The cost of PET-CT scans at government hospitals is ₹12,500 (approximately $150 USD), while private centers charge between ₹18,000 to ₹22,000 (approximately $220 to $265 USD). Similarly, MRI tests are significantly more expensive in private facilities. KGMU manages a heavy load of 3,500 beds and 12,000 to 14,000 outpatient department (OPD) patients daily, while RMLIMS handles 1,100 beds and over 4,000 OPD patients. Healthcare experts emphasize the need for urgent enhancements in diagnostic infrastructure to prevent adverse impacts on patient outcomes.
