Starting April 10, 2023, cash payments at highway toll plazas in India have been completely abolished as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) implements a fully digital toll collection system. The new regulations require all toll transactions to be conducted electronically, primarily using FASTag, which is now effectively mandatory for vehicle owners. Those without an active FASTag can still pay via digital methods like UPI, but at a 1.25 times higher toll fee. Non-compliance may lead to denied passage or vehicle removal from the lane, with potential fines for late payments. The updated rules also tighten toll exemptions, linking them strictly to authorized vehicles and official usage, thereby reducing disputes at toll plazas. For frequent travelers, the government offers an annual FASTag pass priced at ₹3,075 (roughly $37 USD), which allows for up to 200 toll crossings. Vehicle owners are advised to ensure their FASTag is active and funded to avoid travel disruptions.
