In response to a global liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply crisis, the Indian government is intensifying efforts to boost compressed biogas production. Neeraj Mittal, secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasized the need to streamline biogas initiatives at a conference in New Delhi, highlighting that biogas serves as a sustainable alternative to LNG. The SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme, launched in 2018, aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for biogas production from waste. With 45% of India's LNG imports from Qatar disrupted due to regional conflicts, the government is keen to develop a similar roadmap for compressed biogas as it has done for ethanol. Last fiscal year, India imported approximately 27 million tonnes of LNG, valued at $14.9 billion. As the country produces around 55% of its natural gas needs, much of this is used for city gas distribution, leaving sectors like fertilizers and power reliant on imports. Meanwhile, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is on a visit to Qatar to address these supply issues.
