The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has updated its classification of districts affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in India. The previous 'most affected' designation has been replaced with three new categories: 'LWE affected,' 'districts of concern,' and 'legacy and thrust districts.' Despite the change in classification, the total number of districts in the LWE category remains at 38. This revision reflects a shift in the severity of violence in these areas, with the red corridor contracting from over 200 districts in 2005 to just two in 2026. Currently, Bijapur in Chhattisgarh and West Singbhum in Jharkhand are the only districts classified as 'LWE affected.' The MHA has also identified Kanker in Chhattisgarh as a 'district of concern' and listed 35 other 'legacy and thrust districts' across nine states. The MHA emphasizes that this categorization is crucial for the deployment of resources under various schemes aimed at tackling LWE. Over the past five years, the government has released ₹1,685.65 crore (approximately $204 million USD) to LWE-affected states under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme, which supports security operations and community initiatives.
