Residents of around 15 coastal villages are voicing urgent demands for infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a bridge over the Thamirabarani river to facilitate quicker access between Thengapattinam and Erayumanthurai. Currently, fishermen must detour approximately 8 km, which could be reduced to under five minutes with the bridge. Additionally, waste management issues plague the area, with locals frequently dumping waste near water bodies due to inadequate municipal services. The AVM canal, which is crucial for preventing saltwater intrusion, remains severely polluted despite annual allocations for restoration. Other pressing demands include road maintenance, a cold storage facility for seafood, and upgrades to healthcare services in Thoothoor.
