On Wednesday, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi reinforced its earlier directive that all tankers used for commercial water supply, including those transporting treated water from sewage treatment plants, must be fitted with GPS. This clarification arose after applicants argued that the initial directive should not apply to treated water tankers. The NGT's original order, issued on March 28, 2025, aimed to combat illegal groundwater extraction and ensure accountability in water supply. The tribunal identified deficiencies in the monitoring practices of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), noting that proper records were not being maintained and drivers lacked necessary documentation. The DJB is now required to issue gate and transit passes for each tanker and maintain detailed records, including the names of owners, drivers, and the quantity of treated water supplied. Tanker drivers must carry these documents while transporting water, which must be presented upon request by authorities. Failure to comply may result in legal action under the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010, and other environmental laws.
