In FY26, India achieved a remarkable milestone by adding 6.05 GW of wind energy capacity, marking a 46% increase from the 4.15 GW added in FY25. This is the highest annual addition recorded to date, surpassing the previous peak of 5.5 GW in FY17. The cumulative installed wind power capacity now stands at 48.3 GW. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) attributed this growth to improved policy clarity, readiness in transmission, competitive tariff discovery, and a robust project pipeline. Major contributors to this capacity addition include states like Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, which are also advancing wind-solar hybrid projects. To further support the sector, the government has introduced measures such as concessional customs duties on wind turbine components, waivers on inter-state transmission charges until June 2028, and competitive bidding frameworks. The Global Wind Energy Council projects that India's wind energy capacity could double to 107 GW by 2030, although only 4.5% of the country's total wind potential of 1,164 GW has been utilized so far.
