In Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, a court has sentenced two British nationals, Hassan Amman Saleem and Sumitra Shakeel Olivia, to six months' imprisonment for illegally entering India from Nepal. The Chief Judicial Magistrate Pratibha Chowdhry also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 (approximately $600 USD) on each convict. If they fail to pay the fine, they will face an additional three months' imprisonment. The pair was arrested in November 2025 while attempting to cross the Indo-Nepal border without valid entry documents. They had traveled to Nepal for a charity program for hearing-impaired children and held valid visas for Nepal. After their arrest by the Sashastra Seema Bal and Uttar Pradesh Police, they were granted bail but required to remain in the country during their appeal period. The court underscored the necessity of enforcing immigration laws through appropriate punishment.
