In a bid to enhance consumer safety in Maharashtra's gig economy, Labour Minister Akash Fundkar has directed officials to establish stricter verification norms for workers in online delivery services. During a meeting at Mantralaya in Mumbai, the need for robust background checks was emphasized, particularly for companies like Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit that heavily rely on gig workers. The current onboarding process lacks transparency, often involving third-party verification that raises accountability concerns. Fundkar proposed a comprehensive regulatory framework that includes mandatory registration of gig workers with the cyber department and the introduction of QR code-based identification cards for workers. This initiative aims to improve traceability and security for consumers. Furthermore, the framework may require companies to conduct regular audits and submit reports to law enforcement if suspicious activities arise. Safety measures for women passengers, such as the option to choose female drivers, were also discussed. The government's focus on consumer safety reflects the rapid growth of Maharashtra's digital services ecosystem.
