Greece has announced a ban on social media access for children under 15, effective January 1, 2027, as part of efforts to address concerns about anxiety and sleep deprivation linked to excessive screen time. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis highlighted the need for this measure in a video message, acknowledging that many young people may view it as unfair but asserting its necessity for their wellbeing. The ban specifically targets platforms that promote endless scrolling, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, while messaging services like WhatsApp and YouTube will remain accessible. Mitsotakis has called for coordinated action across the European Union, proposing a unified digital age of majority at 15 and regular age verification for all platforms. Public support for the ban is high, with an ALCO poll indicating that approximately 80% of respondents approve, though nearly 60% believe minors may find ways to bypass the restrictions. Greece's initiative aligns with a global trend, as other countries like Australia and the UK are also tightening regulations on children's social media access.
