The Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is accelerating its efforts to transform Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, by constructing 11,000 rehabilitation homes in Sector 6, located on a 35-acre railway land parcel in central Mumbai's Matunga. The DRP has called on residents to cooperate and vacate their homes to allow for the construction of these new tenements, each measuring 350 square feet. As part of the project, the Maharashtra government holds a 20% stake in NMDPL, the development company primarily owned by an entity of the Adani Group. Residents in several identified clusters are encouraged to finalize rental agreements and vacate their tenements before the onset of the monsoon or the new academic year to minimize disruptions. To facilitate this transition, the DRP has introduced a support framework that includes options for transit accommodation, rental housing assistance, and a one-time shifting allowance of ₹5,000 (approximately $60 USD). This initiative aims to ensure a smooth transition for residents while expediting the construction of modern rehabilitation homes.
