On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India expressed serious concern over the gherao and violence directed at judicial officers in West Bengal, who were handling cases related to discrepancies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi characterized the incident as a 'brazen attempt' to intimidate judicial officers and undermine the court's authority. The court emphasized that such actions constitute criminal contempt and reflect an abdication of duty by the West Bengal Government, which failed to ensure the officers' safety. The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to deploy additional central forces to protect judicial officers and to investigate the violence through an independent agency, such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA). A preliminary report on the incident is to be submitted to the court.
