Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, a Kuwaiti American journalist, has been detained in Kuwait since early March following social media posts about the ongoing war in Iran. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for his immediate release, stating that the charges against him—spreading false information and harming national security—are vague and commonly used to suppress independent journalism. Shihab-Eldin was in Kuwait visiting family when the conflict escalated on February 28, involving multiple regional powers including the United States and Iran. Since March 2, he has not been seen publicly, and his social media accounts have been deactivated. The CPJ has reported a troubling trend in the region, with nine journalists killed and several others detained or threatened since the conflict began. In response to the war, Kuwait's Ministry of the Interior has imposed strict censorship, warning against the dissemination of information related to Iranian attacks, which has led to multiple arrests for spreading what authorities deem false news.
