India is advancing power transmission projects valued at ₹5 trillion (approximately $60 billion USD) to tackle transmission challenges that impede the growth of renewable energy. D Saibaba, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Power, highlighted the urgency of these projects during an industry event, noting that achieving 500 gigawatts of installed capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030 is a national priority. Last financial year, projects worth ₹1 lakh crore (around $12 billion USD) progressed through the National Committee on Transmission stage, while works valued at ₹1.47 trillion (about $17.6 billion USD) advanced past the Special Purpose Vehicle stage. The Central Electricity Authority has devised a plan to integrate over 900 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2036, requiring 1.4 lakh circuit kilometres of transmission lines and 8.3 lakh megavolt-amperes of substation capacity at an estimated cost of ₹7.9 trillion (approximately $95 billion USD). However, the development faces obstacles, including right-of-way issues and the need for advanced high voltage direct current systems. To mitigate these challenges, the CEA is enhancing coordination among government agencies and focusing on domestic manufacturing to ensure energy security and self-reliance.
