To promote the use of annual parking passes, Chandigarh's municipal corporation (MC) is proposing a 10% reduction in fees, lowering the annual cost for four-wheelers from ₹6,000 to ₹5,400 and for two-wheelers from ₹3,000 to ₹2,700. This initiative is part of the MC's strategy to ensure a steady revenue stream and encourage more motorists to adopt the MC OnePass system, which was launched in January 2023 to provide a cashless and hassle-free parking experience. Currently, approximately 3,000 users utilize these passes, which allow unlimited entry and exit at all paid parking sites under the MC's jurisdiction.
In addition to the fee reduction, the upcoming General House meeting on April 8 will also address the ambiguous taxation of stilt parking spaces. Stilt parking, commonly found in malls and residential areas, is currently taxed at ground floor rates, while basement areas are taxed at lower rates. The House Tax Assessment Committee has recommended a hybrid taxation model, proposing that commercially used stilt parking be taxed at ground floor rates, while non-revenue areas be taxed at basement rates. This decision could significantly impact municipal revenue and the uniformity of property tax assessments across Chandigarh.
