Chhattisgarh's government is deploying commandos from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bastar Fighters to police stations across seven districts in the Bastar region, marking a shift from counter-insurgency to regular policing. Approximately 4,000 personnel will be involved in this transition, which comes after a substantial decline in Left-wing extremism. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated in Parliament that India is now nearly Maoist-free, citing that 4,839 Maoists have surrendered, while 706 were killed and 2,218 arrested in the last three years. The DRG and Bastar Fighters, composed mainly of local tribals and former Maoists, will receive training for routine policing tasks, including crime investigations and traffic management. The initiative aims to strengthen police presence in remote tribal areas, utilizing personnel familiar with the local language and geography. The state government will decide on the future of the anti-Maoist Special Task Force, while the withdrawal of central forces will be determined by the Union government.
