Manipur's Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the alarming rise in violence in Manipur, particularly following recent clashes that left two people dead and 29 injured. This violence erupted after a mob attacked a paramilitary camp in Bishnupur, protesting the deaths of two young siblings in a previous explosion. In response to the unrest, the state government has extended the suspension of mobile internet services for two additional days and imposed curfews in several districts, including Imphal West and East, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal. The ethnic violence, which began between the Meitei and Kuki communities, has resulted in 260 deaths and displaced approximately 60,000 people since May 2023. Konthoujam expressed gratitude for the central government's support and emphasized the need for measures to ensure public safety and stability. Officials are particularly concerned about the spread of misinformation via social media, which could exacerbate tensions and lead to further violence.
