Concerns have emerged among central government employees and pensioners following a delay in the announcement of the January 2026 dearness allowance (DA) revision. This is the first delay in a decade, leading to speculation about whether the government will skip the hike or simply defer it. The DA is a cost-of-living adjustment paid by the Government of India, typically revised biannually based on inflation data from the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW). Experts, including Adhil Shetty (CEO of BankBazaar), have clarified that the delay is procedural, linked to the transition to the 8th Pay Commission, and does not signal a policy reversal. They anticipate a 2-3% increase in DA, raising the rate from 58% to approximately 60-61%. For employees with a basic pay of ₹56,100, this increase could result in a monthly gain of over ₹1,100 and arrears of around ₹6,700-₹7,000 for the first quarter. Employee representatives have voiced their dissatisfaction, urging the Finance Minister to expedite the announcement of both DA and Dearness Relief (DR) due to rising discontent among employees and pensioners. Despite the delay, experts expect the announcement to come in April 2026, with the hike implemented retrospectively from January 1, 2026.
