The Uttar Pradesh government has made the Kisan Pehchan Patra (Farmer ID) mandatory for farmers to access benefits from agricultural schemes and procure crops at the minimum support price (MSP). This order, issued by Chief Secretary SP Goyal, aims to enhance beneficiary identification and reduce leakages in subsidy distribution. Currently, 2.33 crore out of 2.88 crore farmers in the state have been issued IDs, with a campaign launched to cover the remaining farmers. The Farmer ID system is part of the central government's Agristack initiative, which functions similarly to the Aadhaar system for citizens, providing a unique 10-digit ID for each farmer. Starting from May 2026, the distribution of subsidized fertilizers will also be linked to the Farmer ID. This initiative is expected to ensure targeted delivery of subsidies and tighten verification processes in crop procurement and farm input distribution.
