Amid a worsening liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage linked to the ongoing crisis in West Asia, the Indian government has announced a significant increase in the supply of 5-kilogram Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant laborers. The supply will be doubled across all states, with the exact number determined based on average daily sales recorded between March 2 and 3, 2026. Since March 23, approximately 7.8 lakh cylinders have been sold, with sales surging to over 1.06 lakh cylinders on April 6, compared to a daily average of 77,000 in February. State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) are assisting state governments in this initiative, which also includes the organization of awareness camps that have sold more than 10,000 cylinders in just four days. The government has also reported that 86,439 metric tonnes of commercial LPG have been sold since March 14, equivalent to over 4.55 lakh 19-kg cylinders. To manage the crisis, the government has cut commercial LPG allocations to prioritize domestic household needs, as around 90% of India's LPG imports come from West Asia.
