The Election Commission of India has announced an increase of 635,000 electors in Tamil Nadu, raising the total electorate to 57.3 million as of April 6, 2026. The growth includes 208,000 new voters in the 18-19 age group. The districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu, Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, and Tiruppur reported the highest increases in voter registrations. As the scrutiny of nominations for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections commenced on April 7, a total of 7,599 applications were received, with 3,585 accepted and 1,671 rejected. Notably, the nomination of TVK candidate M. Arunkumar was rejected after discrepancies were pointed out by AIADMK representatives. Allegations of abduction arose when Arunkumar failed to return with additional documents. The electoral roll now includes 29.3 million women, 28 million men, and 7,728 electors from the third gender, reflecting a diverse electorate. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is April 9, 2026.
